C&#8217;est une ville portuaire de la mer M\u00e9diterran\u00e9e, situ\u00e9e dans le nord-ouest de l&#8217;Alg\u00e9rie, \u00e0 432 km de la capitale Alger, et le chef-lieu de la wilaya du m\u00eame nom, en bordure du golfe d&#8217;Oran.<\/p>\n<p>La ville est situ\u00e9e au fond d&#8217;une baie ouverte au nord et domin\u00e9e directement \u00e0 l&#8217;ouest par la montagne de l&#8217;A\u00efdour (ou Murdjajo), d&#8217;une hauteur de 580 m, ainsi que par le plateau de Moulay Abd al Qadir al-Jilani. L&#8217;agglom\u00e9ration s&#8217;\u00e9tend de part et d&#8217;autre du ravin de l&#8217;oued Rhi, maintenant couvert.<\/p>\n<p>Fond\u00e9e en 902 par les Andalous, Oran conna\u00eet une succession de dynasties arabo-berb\u00e8res. Occup\u00e9e par les Espagnols en 1509, elle est reconquise en 1792 par le bey Mohamed el-Kebir, apr\u00e8s un premier interm\u00e8de (entre 1708 et 1730) et devient le si\u00e8ge du beylik de l&#8217;Ouest. Pendant la colonisation fran\u00e7aise, elle conna\u00eet un d\u00e9veloppement rapide, et devient la deuxi\u00e8me ville d&#8217;Alg\u00e9rie. Apr\u00e8s l&#8217;ind\u00e9pendance, elle demeure la capitale \u00e9conomique de l&#8217;Ouest du pays et le principal centre financier, commercial et industriel.<\/p>\n<p>En 2008, la commune comptait 609 940 habitants, alors que la population de l&#8217;agglom\u00e9ration oranaise \u00e9tait d&#8217;environ 1 000 000 habitants. En 2020, les estimations officielles de l&#8217;aire urbaine indiquaient une population de 1 760 685 habitants.
